Trump repeatedly claims that foreign countries pick up the tab for his trade wars. They don’t. American households do.
If the higher tariff levels Trump has proposed end up staying in place, they would cost the average U.S. family up to $4,700 annually. That’s thousands of dollars that Americans can’t afford, for a goal that doesn’t even make sense.
Businesses can’t plan around chaos.
Trump’s chaotic approach to tariffs has left businesses constantly guessing what’s next. Sudden tariff hikes have cost global companies over $34 billion in lost sales and higher costs. The Federal Reserve says that Trump’s unpredictable trade policy directly slows economic growth, which is the opposite of what he promised and what we need.
Prices keep rising for everyone.
Trump’s tariffs mean American families pay more at the checkout line. Higher costs on imported steel and aluminum have driven up prices for everyday products like cars, appliances, and canned goods. While many tariffs have been temporarily paused, if they do take effect they will be extremely disruptive and costly. And business groups estimate that Americans will pay up to $3,000 more for cars, and nearly $11,000 more for houses, from Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs alone. These costs are unsustainable and absolutely punishing for American families.
America’s allies are fed up.
Trump’s tariff frenzy has badly damaged relationships with key allies. The European Union is already preparing retaliation against new tariffs, and leaders in Canada and Mexico have publicly called Trump’s latest moves “illegal,” announcing their own countermeasures. Far from protecting American interests, these tariffs have sparked global backlash, undermining cooperation on critical issues and making it harder for American companies to sell their products overseas.
The Bottom line
Trump’s tariffs aren’t helping American workers—they’re punishing them. They drive up prices, inject chaos into the economy, and isolate the U.S. from our allies. What started as an empty campaign promise is now a costly mistake hitting Americans’ finances every day.
And what is worse is that the effects of the actual tariffs will not be felt for a month or two. They will slow our economy and raise the prices of all the cars that depend on Canadian and Mexican parts.
