My Volga German ancestors left Russia in 1907. I know exactly why the Ukrainians are fighting so hhard to keep their independence

"If my father were alive today, I know he would share my horror at what’s happening here,." My father, too, an Eisenhower Republican, a Navy man during WWII a who loved this country. He would be so sad today.

I hope the author stays in the USA. Sometimes you, me, others must stay and fight and dissent by whatever means available. Canada is the closest last refuge, but leaving here ensures Canada will retain the closest last refuge status for too long a time into the future.

Your friends running away to Canada are little better than MAGA. Instead of being cowards, they should stay and fight for their country. We need people to fight, not flee.

Back in 1958 when the voting age for Americans was 21, I voted for Eisenhower, my first presidential election. Noteworthy only because I was registered as a Democrat and Ike was a Republican. The GOP was a lot different back then, as Mr. Aldrich points out, and Ike was a lot different than the present president. Yeah, it was a different world...some would say a better world. Can the US ever return to the "good old days"? Not likely, certainly not easily. Getting rid of the trump-MAGA bunch would be a good start, having the Repub Party be rebuilt will also have to happen. Today I'm still a Democrat voter with high hopes of there being changes made in the mid-term and someone worthwhile as the Dem candidate in 2028. One can only hope.

Canada changed their citizenship law in December. Citizenship is no longer restricted to one generation. Those who can prove ancestry are already citizens, but getting proof has a backlog of about a year. Demand is enormous.

I have a hard time understanding why people are so cyclical in their bad decisions. Hate, racism, white supremacy, all lead to fascism. Not long ago we fought the biggest war in the history of the world to rid ourselves of this scourge, and here it is, like the Phoenix! The people who chose fascism in the thirties and forties at least had an excuse; they were suffering through the worst depression ever, and were desperate for change. There is no excuse today except the less evolved think it's time to hate everyone who is not exactly like themselves!

I get it for naturalized citizens and immigrants but the rest are not so brave.

What "people"? Don't be coy. Be specific.
