Great article! Clearly describing how this administration and its federal enforcement practices are seriously hurting crime fighting efforts across the country instead of helping bring down the crime rates as Trump promised. Thanks Rick!
Thank you both for your commendable life time of service and for taking the time to speak up here. The only reason to use ICE in the way this administration is wielding its power, is to create the kind of fear of authority that exists in authoritarian regimes, not to promote safety in a well policed community. I travelled to East Berlin, Hungary and Bulgaria many years ago when the Iron Curtain was still firmly in place. I saw the kind of fearful state people lived in there. It was oppressive and the atmosphere of distrust was palpable. Not the kind of environment conducive to creating a caring and cooperative sense of community. Only fear of authority and distrust of your neighbours. If that’s the kind of America that’s wanted, staying this course will get there. If not, it’s time to ramp up resistance. The results of the recent elections are very encouraging. The kind of push back on all levels of positions of authority, no matter how mundane is key! 💪🏼
Say it LOUDER! Pl ease submit to ALL news as Op-Ed. If ALL states (including sanctuary) agreed to hand over illegal immigrants in jails, we'd all support that (as that's our taxes) But if we do that, and agree as policy, ICE needs to GET OUT. Then they don't need that budget we are all paying for. WE ARE PAYING to undermine local law. Make it make sense
Well written, clear and concise. In 2015 we had an influx of unaccompanied minors fleeing war in Syria and Afghanistan. Many people talked about how these young people were commiting crimes but when we looked into it, there was only a small number of these kids arrested, the rest were actually kids from immigrant families, who were born and raised here. The unaccompanied minors understood that commiting any crime meant deportation.
As a retired police officer I have been worried about the damage that ICE is doing to our communities law enforcement agencies and the public trust of those agencies.
A lot of people are worried about what our local law enforcement agencies can and won’t do to assist ICE.
Did the ICE agents lower their masks when they were eating lunch in your town or did they inhale their food through the mask? That's all I want to know.
Thank you for your dedicated service, Chief Myers. You, with highlights of your words, could make a great commercial that should follow Kristi Noem's ads about making America safe again.
Thank you Chief Myers. We need more voices like yours out in the public square.

Actually, crime rates are already going down.
Whatever "high crime rate" Trump is talking about exists only in his own mind.
Oh, wait...
Thank you for serving and speaking up. The reason for sanctuary cities is so will call the police when crimes are committed.

He acts like the unlawful arrests are nothing more than a senior citizens bus junket to one of his defunct casinos.
