Donald Trump Goes Full Mad King
Why his latest threats against Iran are different.
In the past 24 hours, Donald Trump’s rhetoric on Iran has crossed a line. This morning, he wrote, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.” Yesterday, he said, “The entire country can be taken out in one night, and that night might be tomorrow night.” When asked if he is concerned whether his threats to bomb power plants and bridges amount to war crimes, he answered, simply, “No, not at all.”
Previous presidents have been accused of violating the Geneva Conventions, the series of treaties that form the basis of international humanitarian law. Barack Obama was criticized for his use of drones during his presidency. George W. Bush faced condemnation when his administration used torture as an interrogation technique. In fact, most presidents since Harry Truman have faced controversies regarding war crimes.
But there is something different about Trump, who seemingly revels in his utter disdain for the rules of war. He threatened to bomb Iran “back to the stone ages” in a primetime address from the White House. His Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, dismissed the “rules of engagement” as “stupid.” Over 100 international law experts signed a letter saying that the U.S.’s strikes on Iran since February 28 violate the United Nations Charter. Moreover, they assert that the conduct of U.S. forces since the initial strikes, as well as statements by senior government officials, may constitute war crimes. Based on Trump’s own comments, he won’t let any of that stop him from doing whatever he likes in this war.
Trump bypassed Congress in initiating this war in the first place, potentially in violation of the Constitution, which states that “The Congress shall have Power … To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water.” In addition, the war in Iran also clearly violates the UN Charter prohibition on the use of force. We’re not lawyers, but this is not just a legal question—it’s a moral one:
According to the Iranian Red Crescent, 67,414 civilian sites have been struck, of which 498 are schools and 236 health facilities.
Between February 28 and March 30, 2026, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, at least 2,100 Iranian civilians have been killed by U.S. and Israeli forces, including 216 children.
Trump’s threats to “obliterate” Iran’s energy infrastructure, if carried out, would plainly violate the Geneva Convention. Mirjana Spoljaric, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, said, “War on essential infrastructure is war on civilians.”
Meanwhile, on the home front, Trump is reeling as a frenetic Wall Street and rapidly rising gas prices undermine his assurances that the American economy is on rock-solid footing. He’s asking Congress for more money to wage a war that his supporters did not want, potentially offsetting any cash boosts that (he claims) voters would receive from last summer’s One Big Beautiful Bill tax cuts. And he’s grasping for a way to salvage the situation.
But now, at the speed he can type and post to Truth Social, Trump is plunging our country into exactly the kind of Middle East conflict he condemned on the campaign trail.
Tonight, at 8 pm EST, Trump must put his cards on the table. Will he follow through on his threats, and order the U.S. armed forces to violate the Geneva Conventions? Will he back down, claim that diplomacy is working, and push the deadline another two-to-three weeks? Will he declare complete and total victory?
Or will he take one more massive step in undermining principled American leadership in the world?
Home of the Brave exists to show Americans the real-world consequences of this administration’s policies, and to highlight what bravery looks like in defense of American democracy.

I’m rooting for some country to kidnap Trump and Hegseth and bring them both before The Hague.
Thank you. I’m honestly scared shitless about what happens next. Trump is unhinged. Every day a different story with increasingly inflamed rhetoric. Some of your readers might appreciate this (admittedly very long) poem I wrote earlier today:
A Timeline of Lies and Deceit
When you put all of Trump’s shifting demands, conditions, and timelines together in one place and just read them chronologically, you get a picture of either a degenerate bullshitter, or a man who’s lost his mind.

From the start of the war in Iran
in every direction it’s spun—
the story of a man obsessed
with all of the ways he has won.
It’s a long and disjointed tale
of the ludicrous things he’s said
since the day it first began—let’s pause
to tally his quotes and the dead.
2/28/26
This is our objective:
to eliminate imminent threats
from a vicious, hostile regime that was
as terrible as it gets.
To the wonderful folks of Iran:
Your freedom is soon at hand.
When we’re finished go take your country back.
It’s yours to grab while you can.
3/2/26
I don’t want to see it drag on.
I always thought four weeks.
We’re a little ahead of schedule, frankly,
in doing all that we seek.
3/4/26
One of the things I want
is to help them pick the man
who’ll replace that fool, Khamenei, as
the leader of Iran.
3/5/26
We want to clean out everything—
yes, one and done in Iran.
Not to return and do it again
after a ten year span.
3/5/26
They’re wasting their time with his son.
The guy’s a total lightweight.
I’ll get my say, and there ain’t no way
he’ll be their next head of state.
3/5/26
We’re going to have to choose him—
a new leader, along with Iran,
we’re going to have to choose him—yes,
of course that’s part of the plan.
3/6/26
UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!
Without it there’s no deal.
Read my lips, you idiots.
Don’t think this isn’t for real.
3/6/26
In case there was any doubt
about what I said before
when I used the word “unconditional”—what is
needed to end the war—
it could be that they announce it,
or maybe that they’re so whipped
that there’s nothing and no one left standing
that they can fight us with.
3/6/26 -l
What the President meant, quite simply,
according to Karoline Leavitt,
is that the war will be over whenever
he damn well decides to say it.
3/7/26
Ari Larijani
in fact has already surrendered
to the countries in the Middle East.
We’re next, then the war will be ended.
3/7/26
NATO is totally worthless.
They refused to join in the fun.
We don’t need people that only enter
wars we’ve already won.
3/11/26
We’ve won. Let me tell you, we’ve won.
In less that an hour all done.
Done and dusted, their country busted.
All over. But we won.
3/13/26
Oh, how the Fake News hates to admit
we are great and they are inept.
Iran is defeated and wants a deal—
Just not one that I would accept.
3/14/26
We’ve decimated Iran
in every conceivable way.
The rest of you who want your oil,
step up and take care of the Strait!
The U.S. stands ready to help—
A LOT! And coordinate
so all goes quickly, smoothly and well,
but it’s time that you own your fate.
3/21/26
If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN
the Strait of Hormuz WITHOUT THREAT
in 48 HOURS from this exact
point in time we’ll get
their various POWER PLANTS
My patience they shouldn’t test.
We’ll START WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST and then
obliterate all of the rest.
3/23/26
We’re intent on making a deal.
They want to make one too.
We’re working on a plan as we speak.
The war will be over soon.
3/24/26
You know, I don’t like to say this—
because this war’s been won—
but the only thing that keeps it going
is how the fake news gets spun.
3/25/26
We’ve crafted a fabulous peace plan
they’d be stupid not to accept.
Dismantle their nukes, reopen the Strait—
how much better for them could it get?
3/26/26
I’m putting a pause on the period
of Energy Plant destruction
for 10 more Days till Monday, 8
P.M. per my instruction.
3/30/26
Open the Strait for Business now
or Obliteration Day!
We’ll blow up everything in sight
to end our lovely ‘stay.’
All your Electric Power Plants,
your Oil Wells and your Island
(and possibly desalinization plants)
You can kiss them all goodbye then!
3/31/26
I had one goal and it’s met.
They will have no nuclear weapon.
It took just a matter of hours for me
to teach them all a lesson.
3/31/26
We’ll be leaving very soon.
Now what happens to the Strait?
We’ll have nothing to do with that, okay?
But I think it’ll be very safe.
4/1/26
The countries of the world
that receive their oil through Hormuz
must take care of it and cherish it.
It’s for them to protect and use.
4/4/26
Remember when I gave them
ten days to MAKE A DEAL?
Their time is almost up, all Hell
will “reign” down on them for real!
4/5/26
You crazy Irani bastards,
now open the Fuckin’ Strait!
Or you’ll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH!
Praise Allah—I just can’t wait!
4/5/26
If they don’t come through,
if they want to keep it closed
then they’re going to lose every power plant.
It’s up to them, you know.
Just read them all in order.
This list of things he’s said.
The ramblings of a mad, mad man.
And what yet lies ahead?
