While I fully appreciate the difference in scale and audience, WNBA star Breanna Stewart spoke out on this 2 days ago, and Wemby is not the one who “broke pro athletes’ silence” on the issue.

Thank you Breanna Stewart & Victor Wembenyama💙 I know Coach Steve Kerr has risen up many times even in his first term. It’s very personal to him as his father had been shot but he’s used his voice & platform often. I love sports esp Bball & I support them all & know them all by name. Charles Barclay just spoke out from his heart a several days ago…love u Charles🥰

Both Barkley and Coach Kerr spoke out a few days ago. I don't always agree with Barkley but I appreciate his passion and authenticity. And Steve Kerr is my favorite.

I live in Fl but my roots are in Philly & I met Charles years ago & he’s great! I’m a big fan of Steve Kerr & his Warriors💙✊

Plenty of female professional athletes already spoke out, including members of the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA and Minnesota Frost PWHL team, in addition to Breanna Stewart. Wemby is most definitely not the first and hopefully won’t be the last…male or female.

This contrast about Wemby speaking out while most American athletes stay quiet is telling. The Gen Z angle here matters too becaus these younger fans basically live on short form content where athletes' off court takes spread fast. If a 22 year old from France feels safe enough to call out whats happening, that silence from established stars with way more protections feels increasingly calculated.

When the French soldiers treated American soldiers who were fighting next to them in WW I (or maybe WWII) with dignity, the US top brass asked the French not to do that. Sad, isn't it. After all this many years, some of us still have to hyphenate our nationality on government forms.

Glad Wembenyama said what he said, but he certainly wasn’t the first, as many here mentioned.

A Frenchman spoke out for Americans to listen and he just happened to be a WNBA star player. It fills my heart to know that there are courageous people using their voice. It doesn't matter if he was the first or the fifth to speak out, he spoke out! A great example for other athletes to follow his lead.

Now that the football season is coming to an end in a couple of weeks, I think I’m gonna start watching some basketball. I haven’t done that in years.

Pro athletes speaking out? Ha! Well, with all that's going on with ICE and the government's secret police it's about time everybody stood up against the old fat balding mad man and his gang of thieves. Doing so does have a positive result... for example the coming Super Bowl.... dumb donnie ain't so dumb... he's not going to attend! Couldn't stand it if the attendees, reportedly 73,000 and 76,000 people, booed him. I won't be there but already I'm booing and deleting everything that comes up with his name attached.
